There haven’t been many new posts here for a while, but a lot has happened in the garden.

Things grew, spread, got harvested, got forgotten, came back again—and somewhere in between, a few new ideas started to take shape.

I’ll be sharing more of that here soon: the garden shed makeover, simple DIY projects, easy seasonal recipes and our very everyday version of homesteading.

My garden photography has also found a new use in printable learning materials, herb cards and matching games. That connection between gardening, creativity and learning feels especially natural to me—not least because I’m also a professor of social work. FAQs simple Homesteading

What are some easy garden-to-table recipes for beginners?

A simple place to start is with recipes that use vegetables you already have from the garden, freezer or market. My Caldo de Res with Garden Vegetables works well with fresh or frozen vegetables, while these Fluffy Pumpkin Yeast Muffins with Pattypan Squash are an easy way to use a seasonal squash harvest.

How can I use and preserve a late-season garden harvest?

Late autumn vegetables can still become simple, warming meals instead of going to waste. I share ideas in Late Autumn Harvest Vegetables: Nutrient-Dense Meals, along with more ways to preserve seasonal food in Homestead Recipes – Preserving What Nourishes Us.

What are some common gardening mistakes beginners can avoid?

Many gardening lessons come from things that do not work quite as planned. In Companion Gardening Mistakes I Made (So You Don’t Have To), I share some of the mistakes I made myself. I also explain Why I Always Choose Open-Pollinated Seeds and what self-sowing lamb’s lettuce taught me about letting the garden do part of the work.

How do I start simple homesteading at home?

Simple homesteading can begin with one manageable habit, such as composting kitchen and garden waste. My guide on How to Start a Compost Pile Step by Step walks through the basics without making the process unnecessarily complicated.

What is a useful gardening gift for someone who grows from seed?

A seed sowing calendar can be a practical gift because it helps gardeners plan when to start different plants throughout the year. Let me inspire you with my blog post about Seed Sowing Calendar Gift Idea for Gardeners.
